I bring a unique and personal perspective to my work as an injury attorney. A few years after the birth of my first child, doctors determined through a brain MRI that he was born with a rare metabolic disorder which impacted his balance, coordination and cognitive functioning. Prior to the MRI, he was significantly delayed on all of his milestones but I was told repeatedly that he was probably just a "late bloomer". When he still could not walk at 2 1/2 years old, I brought him to the pediatrician's office and refused to leave until the doctor listened to me and watched him try to walk, finally the doctor agreed that something might be wrong and ordered the brain MRI. Doctors were unable to say whether he would ever be able to walk and what his future would look like. While still struggling to understand this diagnosis, my mom unexpectedly and tragically died at the young age of 50. Soon after that, I resigned from the DA’s office to focus my attention on my son’s needs and therapy.
There was so much uncertainty surrounding my son's medical condition and I attribute much of my strength and optimism to focusing on just one day at a time. I tried not to look to the future (which was daunting) but rather focused my attention on the tiniest of achievements while trying to teach him the most basic skills of walking, eating and speaking. No one provided us a playbook so I learned to be creative and often intuitive in how I taught him. He loved playing with remotes and car keys when he was a toddler so one day I decided to put the keys on a chair just one step away so he could learn to keep his balance long enough to take just one step. Then when he could take one step, I would move it 2 steps and so on. Giving up was simply not an option. Although he still has some mobility challenges, he walks independently without the use of a wheelchair or any assistive devices. While there is no cure for my son’s condition, he is now 20 and I am grateful he is doing well thanks to many hours of hard work and perseverance. I would say the one thing people most take for granted is their good health and that of their loved ones. As humans, we just don't naturally wake up appreciating our ability to walk, talk or drive, not unless those abilities are taken from us or someone we love. My experience with my son has been quite humbling and has gifted me the understanding of what truly matters in life. I also strongly empathize with anyone who has unexpectedly lost a loved one. I know the feeling firsthand of waking up one day and life as you know it is forever changed. No notice, no goodbye and no chance to say I love you one last time. I do believe these life experiences have helped shape me into the person I am today and assist me in being a powerful and passionate advocate for my clients. My family moved from Queen, NY to Boulder, CO in 1989 when I was 13 years old. We lived just 2 blocks from Chautauqua park so I was fortunate enough to go hiking anytime I wanted. By the time I graduated from Boulder High, I had fallen in love with the mountains and hiking. I am blessed to have shared almost 30 years with my husband who owns a thriving truck repair business in Loveland, Lucky's Diesel Shop. I am known to be a huge animal lover and adore my 3 goofy rescue dogs. I am a proud supporter of the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg which does incredible work rescuing large predators.
